INEC reveals what could lead to the cancellations of results

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will cancel election conducted in any ward where there are instances of irregularities.

This was disclosed by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner inImo State, Prof. Francis Ezeonu, who added that elections in areas where ballot boxes were seized or where voting was marred by any violence would also be voided.

He stated that INEC was prepared for free and fair elections devoid of violence and intimidation and urged stakeholders to cooperate with the commission to achieve this objective.According to him,

“INEC will not accept results in areas where ballotpapers or boxes are carted away byhoodlums or any group or individuals. Election in that area will be cancelled.“What INEC needs is cooperation from members of the community.“

If INEC does not receive cooperation of people in the communities, things will not be okay. I advise politicians and stakeholders to play by the rules and play good politics,” he said.Ezeonu reiterated the commitment of INEC to conduct credible polls in the forthcoming general elections.

He urged political office holders to always ensure that members of their constituencies enjoy dividends of democracy to pave the way for their re-election.

Talking points from Chelsea vs Barcelona

Yesterday was a match that the whole footballing world all turned up to witness
But did it live up to expectation?

Here are the talking points from yesterday's encounter

Records never last With Messi on board

Before yesterday's game. Messi had never registered a goal in 29 attempts against Chelsea but the talisman came up with the goods even in one of his off days to rescue Barcelona

Chelsea tactics spot on

Antonio conte set up his team to break up Barcelona's play and hit them on the counter...it seemed like it was gonna pay off until the next talking point...But I must say Chelsea were unlucky on the night

Inexperience

Only Azpilicueta have faced Barcelona playing as a defender...Christensen Rudiger and others were obviously looking up yo him.The goal they conceded can speak for itself that Chelsea lacked experience in defence

Where is the new Neymar

Barcelona were toothless going forward because they had no Neymar esque kind of player who could wriggle his way from the flanks...only two attackers were on display for Barcelona.Messi and Suarez, the rest were midfielders..Its clear that Barcelona need to integrate Dembele now and fast or get another dribbler instead of passing the ball sideways against a rock solid Chelsea side

What does the second leg hold?

Spurs Vs Arsenal: Stop blaming City, Arsene! Arsenal have been left defenceless by your transfer failings

The Gunners erred badly in failing to sign a quality centre-half during the January window, as Harry Kane proved once again on Saturday As Harry Kane soared above the Arsenal defenders to make it seven goals against the Gunners in seven games, a familiar sense of déjà vu could be seen among those players wearing the red and white at Wembley.

Traditionally, Wembley has been good to Arsenal, the venue for three FA Cup triumphs in the last four seasons, but there were to be no celebrations on Saturday, as Arsene Wenger’s top-heavy side was swept aside by a dominant second-half showing by bitter rivals Tottenham. We shouldn't have been surprised, of course.

Arsenal’s away form in 2018 has been disastrous. They’ve won none of their five games on the road in sofar this year, losing four times and conceding 10 goals overall.A week on from their 5-1 demolition job on Everton at Emirates Stadium, the Gunners' dismal away record was encapsulated in another Jekyll and Hyde defensive performance.

The onus was on Hector Bellerin to attack down the right-hand side but he enjoyed next-to-no success andArsenal struggled to muster up any chances of note inthe first half until the Spaniard smashed an effort overthe bar on 40 minutes.

The 20-year-old Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was the only defensive addition made by Arsenal in January and when Wenger was asked why he didn’t strengthen a porous defence which has conceded the most goals out of the top six (36) so far this season, a familiar excuse was made.“Everybody looks for defenders," he argued.

"You could see again, you look at [Manchester City], they buy again a defender [Aymeric Laporte].

How much money did they spend on defenders in the last three years?

“We don't have the financial power of Manchester City. And the fact that they conceded half the goals we conceded is as well down to the fact that, offensively, they are very powerful. And they have a lot of possession in the opponent's half that we have not."

While Arsenal were spending £60m – a club record – on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund, their rivals were strengthening in key areas by signing players that they desperately needed.

The departure of Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United was indeed a hammer blow but it was offset by the arrivals of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, so perhaps Wenger got his priorities wrong by deciding to bolster an attack which already boasted Alexandre Lacazette and super-sub Olivier Giroud, who has since been sold to Chelsea.

Lacazette’s late spurned opportunity to equalise – an excellent piece of play where he used his movement to go around Davison Sanchez before shooting inches wide – is an example of a player who looks rusty after playing a bit-part in recent matches.

Jonny Evans was targeted by Arsenal in January and what has been labelled as a ‘below-valuation bid' was unsurprisingly rejected by West Brom.

Although he’s not the world class defender Arsenal need, he would have added some solidity to a defence which has looked disorganised and vulnerable away from home this season.

Per Mertesacker is retiring this summer, Laurent Koscielny has a troublesome Achilles problem and the youngsters Rob Holding and Calum Chambers need a spell on loan to aid their development.

Asked why he did not request more money to spend on his defence from Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke,
Wenger added: "If Kroenke gives you £200m, Man City then get £400m."The trend of blaming your competition for their intelligent work in the transfer market has to stop.

Wenger needs to instead focus of better organising his defence if the Gunners are to have any chance of securing a top-four spot this season.

This is now Arsenal's longest run of games without a clean sheet (nine) in 17 years. Those glaring defensive deficiencies weren't addressed in January.

They have to be resolved in the summer.By then, though, it could already be far too late, with Arsenal looking increasingly likely to miss out on Champions League football for the second successive season.

Desperation with no plans; a case of Nigeria’s President.

Even though for a long time, I have heard people saying or thinking or assuming that, I do hate the President. This is untrue , I love the President, I’ve only shown my displeasure to his manners of running the country.

Moving very quickly, history is everywhere, only the idle minds won’t know or hear about history. I really do not want to talk about the days he ruled us as military dictator, but let’s travel down memory lane since 2003 till date.

In 2003 , Mr Buhari choose to run for presidency, he lost. In 2007, he threw his hat again and lost.

2011 was even more exceptional, he contested, he lost , he threw the nation into a chaotic state, refused to talk nor apologize for the massacre unleashed by his supporters and at the end promised not to run for presidency again with deep tears. How interesting!

Well, in 2014 he showed interest again, in December of the same year he won the party nomination to run , under the newly political coalition , the APC.

Their change mantra was everywhere. Promises of different kinds, lies upon lies , tales upon tales. The desperation to rule Nigeria was high. It was like a do or die affair. Threats upon threats.

Now , this is the message. If a man was so desperate to rule Nigeria since 2003 , logically you would think he really has a mapped out plans that would turn Nigeria around in probably four years. Still on logic, if you lost three consecutive elections, and by chance you won the fourth one, ain’t you suppose to perform beyond expectations? At least to proof us who were against you wrong. Buhari betrayed the hopes of those who loved and voted for him!

Even after winning the 2015 election, he had two months to plan before his inauguration, but this man was rather concerned with moving up and down.

He got into presidency, took him six months to form a cabinet, you would think his cabinet would be the best ever, due to the time taken to form it, but it is the most ineffective and shallow cabinet ever formed in this country.

In the space of May 2015 till February 2018, a lot has gone wrong in the country. The worst corruption case in our history happened under this same government whose slogan was anti corruption. The $25 billion NNPC fraud case.

The rate at which the unemployment in the nation grew is beyond human comprehension , using August 2016 index, 4.58 million Nigerians became jobless since Buhari became president in May 2015. The Fulani herdsmen massacre, unfair treatment and killings in the South East. Inflation in the prices of things. Unimaginable fuel scarcity.

Lopsided appointments. Reckless official statements from the presidency, to mention but a few has been the character of this government.

I’m deeply saddened that, despite how much this man craved for power in Nigeria , going through a lot of rigor to win , how could he have won and have performed woefully? It only shows Buhari is a not a wise man. He has no plans whatsoever.

He is clueless, has no vision or direction. He is only consumed by lust for and of power. He is only desperate in to rule , not to change Nigeria has he and those who marketed him told us.

As I retire my pen, let me further reinstate that, I am deeply concerned by every bit of action , incident and occurrence going on in the nation. I also have a sense of responsibility as a citizen to talk on every issue going on. And again today, like I have been doing, I challenge Nigerians to get their permanent voters card (PVC) and that in 2019 we should unitedly chase this man back home , he of course has nothing to offer, he is only desperate to rule , and his desperation has brought nothing but failure and any further attempt to have another Buhar

i presidency for another four years, means we would perish as a nation.

Official: Walcott joins Everton in £20m deal

The England striker has left the Gunners after failing to establish himself in Arsene Wenger's Premier League squad, linking up with Sam AllardyceEverton have completed the £20 million signing of Theo Walcott from Arsenal.

The 28-year-old makes the switch from the Gunners and becomes Sam Allardyce's second signing of the January transfer window, following Cenk Tosun's arrival from Besiktas

Walcott, who was Arsenal's longest-serving player, scored 108 goals for the north London club but has found game time increasingly difficult to come by this season.

The England international failed to make a single Premier League start under Arsene Wenger this season in a campaign which willdetermine whether or not he will be included in Gareth Southgate's squad for the World Cup in Russia.

As a result of his limited game time at the Emirates, Walcott, who has 47 England caps to his name, has not featured for the Three Lions since their friendly against Spain in November 2016.

With his football limited primarily to cup competitions in 2017-18, Walcott has scored three goals from five Europa League starts and claimed two assists.

It is his lack of opportunity in the Premier League which has seen him decide to leave the club, however, with just 64 minutes of football, spread across six substitute appearances, to his name.

Herdsmen reveal conditions necessary to stop killings

The umbrella body of cattle herders in Nigeria, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association has given the Benue State government conditions for stopping the killing and clashes with farmers in the state.

The cattle breeders said the state Government must revisit and modify the anti-grazing bill for peace to return to communities in the state.

Speaking with Punch on Monday, the Secretary-General of the association, Usman Ngelzerma said the approach taken by the government was unacceptable.

Ngelzerma said, “I like the Benue State governor. He is a peace-loving person but is working on wrong advice.

The approach he took is wrong. You cannot change the way of life of a people like the way you turn off a light switch.

“We don’t wish for the crisis to continue but let us give it (the law ) another look. We don’t like the killings; we will never condone the killing of people. Give the farmers their rights but consider the pastoralists too.”

He accused the Miyetti AllahKautal Hore, which supported the then President Goodluck Jonathan in the build-up to the 2015 election, as being at loggerheads with the Benue State Government.

Ngelzerma said that the fighting between the herdsmen and the livestock guards led to the January 1 killings in five communities in the Guma and Logo Local Government Areas of the state in which over 20 persons were murdered.

He added, “The livestock guards have constituted themselves to the police andthe court at the same time. They impose penalties on herdsmen, fine them huge sums of money before releasing them.

That was the situation before this crisis erupted.“I was told that shortly before this crisis, the guardswent to make some arrests in a particular community and they met stiff resistancefrom the Fulani because they were already tired of the persistent harassment from the guards, not the police or the DSS, army or constituted authority.

“This was what led to the violence and unnecessary deaths that followed which we do not condone.”

The breeder further called on the National Assembly to quickly pass the Grazing Reserve Bill into law.

Why we won’t ban cattle rearing in Ondo – State government

The Ondo State government, yesterday, said it would not prohibit cattle rearing in the state.

It, however, said plans were underway to regulate the activities of Fulani herdsmen and their cattle to ensure peaceful co-existence of farmers and the herdsmen in the state.

Herdsmen have been accused of murdering several farmers, raping theirwives and female children and destroying several farmlands in recent times.

Senior Special Assistant to the governor, Mr. Akin Olotu, who said this during a stakeholders’ meeting, notedthat the government had no plan to either ban grazing or restrict anyone from farming.

Olotu said: “The meeting became imperative to find a lasting solution to the unabated crisis between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in the state which have assumed a frightening dimension in the last few weeks.

“We are not going to prohibit cattle rearing in Ondo state; we are going to regulate it. It is not a crime to rear or own cattle in any part of the state, but it has to be done legitimately, it has to be done in such a way that someone’s business is not used to destroy another person’s business.

“So, what we will have in Ondo state is cattle rearing regulation in which case there will be dos and don’ts.”

Liverpool confirm Coutinho sale to Barcelona

The Brazil international ends five years on Merseyside as he is set to finalise his desired move to Camp Nou Philippe Coutinho will become Barcelona’s most expensive signing after a deal worth €160 million was agreed with Liverpool, which is the new British transfer record.

La Liga’s leaders will part with €120m as a guaranteed base fee, with another €40m in performance and appearance-related add-ons that are expected to be triggered.

The 25-year-old will move ahead of Ousmane Dembele as Barca’s highest-cost recruit, also surpassing Paul Pogba as the biggest player trade involving an English club.

Liverpool Football Club today issued the following statement regarding the future of Philippe Coutinho: click to read full statement— Liverpool FC (@LFC)January 6, 2018

There is a possibility that Coutinho will attend Barca's hosting of against Levante on Sunday, with the club hoping to have him training with his new team-mates on Monday.

Liverpool failed in their exhaustive efforts to convince Coutinho, whodid not travel with the squad to a warm-weather camp in Dubai, to remain on Merseyside until the end of the season at the very least.

The Brazilian declined their proposed incentives and offer of a higher wage, repeating his intention to move to Camp Nou with immediate effect.

Having approached the Reds on July 20 with the first of three unsuccessful summer bids bloated by improbable clauses, Barca finally succeeded in their pursuit of the playmaker on Saturday.

Liverpool were definitive in their stance that Coutinho was not for sale at any price in the summer, rejecting his transfer request in the process, but with their No.10 maintaining his desire to depart and Barca finally tabling an acceptable package for his services, Jurgen Klopp agreed to sanction his sale.

The Brazilian made 201 appearances and scored 54 goals for Liverpool after signing in January 2013 from Inter Milan for just £8.5m.

He is now the third most expensive footballer in the world, behind Paris Saint-Germain pair Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Ambode moves to end violation of consumer's rights

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambodeon Wednesday inaugurated the board of Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, with a pledgeto protect the rights of consumers in the State and ensure they get value for moneyspent on goods and services.

Speaking at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja while inaugurating members of the board chaired by consumer rights advocate and lawyer, Mrs Olufunmilola Falana, Governor Ambode said concerted efforts would be made to end the daily reported cases of violation of consumers’ rights in the State especially considering the vantage positionof Lagos as the largest commercial market in Sub-Sahara Africa.

He said the establishment of theboard, aside from being another giant stride of his administration designed to guarantee the welfare of the people on a sustainable basis, was also meant to complement the reforms already embarked uponby the State Government to ensure the ease of doing business in the State.

“The establishment of the Consumer Protection Agency is a strong demonstration of our commitment to the protection of the rights of consumers, the promotion of consumer satisfaction in the State and our resolve to ensure that they get value for money spent on goods and services.

“The need for the Agency has become more imperative in view of the fact that Lagos State, withits huge population, provides the largest commercial market in Sub-Sahara Africa, with the highest reported cases of daily infractions on the consumer rights.

“The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency is therefore meant to complement ourreforms on the ease of doing business in the State especially as it affects the development of the Industrial, Commercial and Consumer satisfaction value chain,”
Governor Ambode said.

While reeling out the terms of reference of the board, the Governor said the agency had been designed to be an effectiveservice centre for the protectionof the interests of Consumers, settlement of Consumer disputes and for other connected purposes as enshrined in the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency Law, Cap.C13, Laws of Lagos State, 2014.

He said owing to the responsibilities of the agency, members of the board were carefully selected both from private and public sectors basedon their impeccable character, remarkable track records, experience on the subject matter and passion for the job.

The Governor, who urged members of the board to hit the ground running, also tasked them to be dutiful and nurture the new agency to become an institution that will guarantee timely delivery of effective services to aggrieved consumers, just as he enjoined Lagosians to utilize the alternative commercial dispute mechanism to be offered by the agency that will guarantee reduced time for the resolution of consumer related cases.

Besides, the Governor ordered that office of the agency should be located outside Alausa to bring about the sense of independence and engender confidence of the people.

According to him,

“I have just directed that I will like this agency to be situated outside the civil service premises. We don’t want you to be part of us so that the sense of independence that we are givingto this agency is to ensure that we command the respect of consumers generally in the State.

“I want to let you know that we expect you to hit the ground running; I expect that I must start toget feedback as to what ishappening to consumer rights and then to the citizens generally within the shortest possible time,”

the Governor said.

Aside from Falana, other members of the board are Olugbode O. Ajoke (General Manager), Mrs. Sola Salako Ajulo, Mr. Femi Awogbami, Mrs. Toki Mabogunje, Dr. (Mrs.) Adeleke Monsurat Modupeola, Mrs. Adejoke Oladipupo, Mr. Alayande Olanrewaju, Mrs. Faderera Lekan-Rotimi, Mr. Segun Tayo Kuti-George, Mrs. Mosunmola Samuel and Mr. Oduyebo O. Jacobs who is to serve as Secretary.

Responding on behalf of the appointees, Falana thanked Governor Ambode for the opportunity given them to serve the people, assuring that they would work in the best interest of consumers and leave very good footprints on the sand of time. Also, Governor Ambode swore-in a new Permanent Secretary, Mr Tunde Sesan Ogundeko who is to resume work at the State’s Independent Electoral Commission.

Bannon has lost his mind - Trump lashes out at close political ally

The president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has lashed out in spectacular manner, at one of his closest political allies, Steve Bannon, Punch reports.

In a statement which was released on Wednesday, January 3, Trump described Bannon, who was his former White House Strategist, as 'insane' and 'irrelevant'.

Trump’s statement was extremely harsh, even for the notoriously combative 45th president.

He stated: “Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”

He continued: “Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isn’t as easy as I make it look.

The US president further claimed that Bannon, who engineered his link to the nationalist far-right, was“only in it for himself.”

Bellerin levels late on for Arsenal plus 5 talking points from Arsenal vs Chelsea game

Hector Bellerin struck in stoppage time to secure a dramatic draw for Arsenal against Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger was left fuming after Eden Hazard and Marcos Alonso staged what had appeared to be a stunning smash and grab raid for Chelsea.

Jack Wilshere had shot Arsenalto within 25 minutes of only their third victory in their last eight Premier League games.

The strike was the midfielder’s first goal in 43 Premier League matches, with his last against West Brom in May 2015.

But referee Anthony Taylor ruled Hector Bellerin had fouled Eden Hazard in the box just twominutes later.

The Belgian then netted from the spot.

With six minutes left Alonso rifled in from close range from substitute Davide Zappacosta’s cross.

But with the clock ticking, Bellerin struck for the Gunners.

Here are five key talking points from the thriller at the Emirates.

1. Wilshere tremendous once again

He has been terrific in his bid to win friends and influence people, namely Wenger, the man who makes the decisions over a new deal.

The question marks over his ability to influence a high-intensity game, however, remained.

Not any more. What tremendous character he showed here.At times he was given the runaround by Cesc Fabregas who was offensively more astute and defensively more productive.

Wilshere’s 33rd-minute yellow card, for clattering into his Spanish counterpart, looked to be frustration.Smashing in that 64th minute sizzler was a far better way of expressing it.

Wilshere is back -and he means business.

2. Sanchez has exploded into life again

Fascinating how he has suddenly exploded into life again after a subdued four weeks or so.

There have been times over thepast month or so when Sanchez has looked as though he has been marking time as heruns his contract down.

Now, with the window open, Chelsea and Manchester City inneed of reinforcements and Liverpool about to lose Coutinho, Sanchez is on fire again.Just to refocus a few minds that might have forgotten what he brings to the party.

He is in a win-win situation of course - a big club this month, big money if he leaves on a freein the summer.

But if you didn’t know better, you’d think someone was angling to get out of north London before February.

3. Clean sheets could help Chelsea's charge

If any one can put together a run to get anywhere near City at the moment it is Chelsea.

They have had their injuries and (as always) their political problems, but right now they are back in the zone.We all know what they can do going forward but at the back they are as solid as a rock.

They’d come into this match hunting their fifth successive league clean sheet.

They rode their luck here for sure when Alexis Sanchez’s shot was pushed onto one post, rolled across the goal line and hit the other.

But overall during their current run, they have made their own luck with their ferocious work rate.

4. Courtois kept Chelsea in the game

He might not have signed a new deal just yet, he might still have some who pine for the glory days of Petr Cech, but Courtois showed here just why he is so important to Chelsea.

The brilliant Belgian kept them in it.He was smartly down to his left to save one-handed when Alexandre Lacazette span his defender in the box and fired goalward.

Before that Courtois was simply outstanding to push Sanchez’s shot onto the post when the Chilean looked for all the world as if he had opened the scoring.

And what a tremendous block that was, minutes after half time, from Lacazette.

He has no chance with that Wilshere strike but he'd been let down for that by his defence. Courtois is still the man for the big occasion for Chelsea.

5. Cech matches the Chelsea keeper

Anything Courtois can do, Cech can do just as well. The former Blue is always fired up against his former club and this occasion was no exception. He made himself big in the 14thminute to worry Morata out of a one-on-one from which the Spaniard looked certain to score.

He saved again, a minute later, from Morata at his near post.
He parried Bakayoko’s shot on the 28th minute. He saved superbly with his legsfrom Hazard five minutes after the break.

From the follow-up Cech pushed away Marcos Alonso’s header. There is life in the old dog yet. His old club will bear witness to that.

Aguero reveals If he might leave city

Manchester City striker, Sergio Aguero, has expressed his desire to see out his contract at the club.

aguero

Speaking after Tuesday’s game, the Argentine star promised to continue working hard until the end ofthe season.

According to Aguero,
“I have until 2020, I think.
