The country produced the first World Scrabble champion, won its first ever Afrobasket title and its Super Eagles stars continued to be shining lights in various leagues around the world.
While many can claim to be Nigerian’s most popular sports men over the past year, they were not necessarily the best in any means.
We ask fans to choose from a selected few (as nominated by Naij.com sport editors), to vote for the best of all who has made most impact in their line of duty in 2015.
Odion Ighalo: A rather surprising name on this list but when you consider his achievements in the 2015 calender year, it makes a whole lot of sense that he is included. He has two goals for the Super Eagles in 2015 as much as any other player.
The first half of the year was spent in the English Championship division where he finished the season with 20 goals in 38 games and helping his team to promotion.
Coming into the Premier League, Ighalo has played with a swagger unseen in any Nigerian striker. He has nine goals in 15 appearances already and is just fourth on the goal scoring list behind Lukaku, Mahrez and Jamie Vardy.
Wellington Jigbere: The World Scrabble champions is living the dream. Wellington defied the odds to emerge world champion. Though his job is not physically tasking, his is mentally strainous. ‘Wellington Jigbere’s head dey there’.
Tosin Oke: Only a matter of time before he became truly appreciated. A serial triple jump winner at the All African Games, Oke continued his good work in 2015. Came eighth at the World Championships in triple jump but won gold at the All Africa Games.
Gbolahan Salami: Top scorer in the just concluded Nigeria Premier League season where he led Warri Wolves to second place last season.
Salami has been over-looked severally for the Super Eagles and was one of those who delivered coach Stephen Keshi his last victory before being ousted as nation team coach scoring against Chad.
