The vitamin that will change your skin

vitamins

Vitamin C Is the most researched and applauded anti-ageing ingredients.

It’s known to boost collagen production, improve skin tone and help prevent UV damage, all thanks to its antioxidant properties (which means it defends against free radicals that cause premature ageing). Yet it wasn’t until recently that I fully appreciated its powers.

It contains 15 per cent ascorbic acid (vitamin C) blended with ferulic acid, both of which are powerful antioxidants that help to smooth, brighten and protect skin.
That’s not to say Drunk Elephant is the only brand creating worthy vitamin C products. There are a few things you should know before parting with your money, though:

1. Understand the lingo
There are several types of vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is the crème de la crème and the most effective, but it is also more unstable within formulas and can cause irritation. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl palmitate and ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate are lightweight versions, but can still have an impact on your skin.

2. Less is more
Research has shown that serums made up of 20 per cent vitamin C provide the maximum amount that skin can absorb. That doesn’t mean you should only buy products that contain this concentration, especially if you have sensitive skin. Between 0.6 and 10 per cent vitamin C can still improve your complexion and leave you with a radiant glow.

3. Packaging matters
Exposure to oxygen and UV light breaks down antioxidant ingredients, including vitamin C. Look for airtight pumps or tubes and dark glass.
