Avengers and Justice League SLAMMED by Valerian director : 'I'm SICK of American propaganda'

  • Besson has been in the headlines already recently with teh release of his much-heralded sci-fi epic.

Valerian is the most expensive film ever made in France and was supposed to be a European answer to the Hollywood dominace of the comicbook and superhero genre.

Unfortunately, after almost three weeks on release it has bombed at the box office, only scraping to $79million worldwide against a whopping production budget of $177million, plus the inevitable enormous promotional costs.

Rather than discuss any potential problems with his own movie, Besson has attacked the Marvel and DC franchises instead for promoting American "propaganda" and "supremacy".

Asked about the recent proliferation of Marvel and DC franchises he told website Cine Pop: "Totally tired of it. Totally. I mean, it was great 10 years ago when we seen the first Spider-Man, Iron Man, and now it’s like number five, six, seven. There’s superheroes working with another superhero, but it’s not the same family. I’m lost."

Besson particualrly has a problem with Captain America, adding: "What bothers me most is that it’s always here to show the supremacy of America and how they are great. I mean, which country in the world would have the guts to call a film ‘Captain Brazil?’ or ‘Captain France?’"

"I mean no one. We would be like so ashamed and say ‘No, no, we can’t do that.’ They can. They call it ‘Captain America’. And everybody thinks it’s normal. So, I’m not here for propaganda, I’m here to tell a story.”
His point is flawed on many fronts.

Firstly, Captain Brazil and Captain Britain actually already exist in the comicbooks.
Secondly, Captain America was created during World War II as a propaganda tool to bolster US support and morale at home.

The latest Marvel movies have dealt with that issue and Chris Evans' incarnation frequently stands against government and nationalist propaganda.
