Obiano’s victory comes despite opposition by his former godfather, ex-governor Peter Obi, who had accused the incumbent of failing to deliver on good governance.
But against all odds, Obiano beat four other candidates and emerged victorious in the poll.

1. Willie Obiano attended primary school at Holy Trinity School in Onitsha and got his WASCE at the Christ the King College (CKC) Onitsha.
2. His political career began in 2013 when he contested the Anambra state gubernatorial election on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and won.
3. He holds a national merit certificate for outstanding service during his NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) in Benue state Nigeria in the 1979/80 service year.
4. Obiano began his banking career in 1981 at the First Bank of Nigeria.
5. He worked for Chevron Oil Nigeria Plc as an accountant and rose to the position of chief internal auditor in 1989.
6. His political godfather, Peter Obi, who assisted him in winning the 2013 election, was against him when he contested for election in 2017.

8. He has a bachelor's degree in accountancy from the University of Lagos and a master of business administration from the same university.
