Amasa Firdaus; islam, muslims and the public opinions...By Gbebikan Adeyemi

Often times, I run from religious arguments, people have questioned why I do run, despite how greatly I contribute to other contemporary issues, but then my reply is simple, as I always say ; I hate to add more division to an already divided world.

The world is divided already alongside religion and it will be awful of young people like me to add more to the division. I won’t dispute the fact that , I have in the time past argued about religion, matter of fact, I’ve stayed four straight hours to argue about religion with a friend and a scholar. I stood for Christianity and he argued for Islam.

Last week Friday, a news broke out about a girl, who was supposed to be called to bar , but was refused to be called to bar, because she insisted that she would not remove her hijab , an intentional act she affirmed to at different interviews, just with the sole aim to challenge the status quo.

For two days I ignored the whole news, because I was cautious and conscious of commenting on such issue , knowing fully well what a sincere comment on such issue could mean and the ill meanings fanatical Muslims are capable of reading to it. But finally I made a comment, it didn’t come out well with the fanatics and I’m so less concerned. Nobody can beat me for my opinions, worst off, you’ll sue me and we will meet at the law court.

Continuing, I’ve realized that our Muslim brothers and sisters have not stopped talking about this issue and they’ve continued to attack people who shared their genuine opinions on this issue. Speaking with some Muslim sisters, they’ve assumed that people hate them for the faith they practiced, this is very untrue. Some Muslim brothers have equally thought awkwardly like the females, thinking people hate islam and considers it as a second class religion. All these are untrue.

Coming to the subject matter, I agree that every Nigerian has a fundamental human right that protects them. I also agree that, there are rules that guides institutions and agencies in the country. And I further do agree that, the constitution is however greater than any sub-constitution of any institutions or agencies. The girl is all wrong. To some extent , I know she had seen all it entails to be called to bar, but then went ahead to challenge the status quo, that’s uncalled for. If she was really a smart girl, she could have done two things; write the NBA ahead of your call to bar ceremony, stating her problems ,maybe there could have been a way out or she should have sued the NBA one time, instead of coming out to the public to cause fights and further strengthen religious hatreds amongst the people.

I respect ladies in hijab, my love for them is unexplainable, anyone close to me , knows I so much love Muslim ladies. I personally spearheaded a campaign in January,2016 in support of hijab sisters, but then sometimes we should learn to apply commonsense and use our brains, taking the hijab for few minutes to be called to bar wouldn’t have changed anything. By now , she probably would have forgotten she did that and would have been a certified lawyer.

And then, I’ve read many people making comparisons, saying in Kenya they allow lawyers to wear hijab, in New York they allow it and stuffs. Use your brains people, that is New York, that is Kenya, excuse me we are talking about Nigeria. Don’t make comparisons!

As I retire my pen, nobody should attack me on my opinion, you can only support this piece or oppose it, with reasonable facts and let’s reason further. Any hate comments won’t be appreciated. And anyone who reads this must understand that, I’ve not written out of sentiments or affiliations , I’ve written this with an open mind.
