'How I got my family out of debt in 1 HOUR': The clever way mum Claire fixed her finances for good

money

Mum of two Claire Gottenmaker set herself a mission to track her spending and make some savings that's when she stumbled across free money saving app (Moneyhub) which to date, has saved her £400.

"I got a bee in my bonnet about getting our finances sorted,” said Claire, 34 from Wiltshire.

"I downloaded trials of a few apps I’d been told about so I could see which might work for me.
"Moneyhub seemed to be simple and you can tailor it to suit your spending, which I wanted to break down.

"It’s amazing when you can see the detail of just how much you spend when you pop into the shop for a loaf of bread and find you’ve picked up a basket full of stuff and paid £25. It’s the only way you can work out where to cut back."

Claire, 34, and husband Andre, 40, have two boys, Luke, nine and five-year-old Blake. Claire said they don’t earn a fortune between their two jobs, so she needed to ensure they weren’t wasting any money.

"I also found we were spending £90 a month on takeaways and eating out – far too much. We now have the odd treat, rather than it being the default.

"And I was spending too much on eBay and Amazon, buying gadgets for the kitchen we never used.

"This does make you stop and think before you spend.
"After the free trial, it cost me £10 a year. But it’s worth every penny. Within the first week, once I got the hang of it and could see where the cash was going, I managed to save £400 off our bills the quickest £400 I’ve ever saved.
"It took me just an hour to change our home insurance, saving £84 a year; pet insurance, £96 per year; TV package, £60 a year; and boiler insurance. It’s really easy and that little bit of effort is paying back big time."

Also, they don’t have pension savings and she wanted to try to free up a bit of money so they can start putting something away for their financial future.
"I soon realised we were spending a small fortune on soft play for the kids,” Claire said.

It’s easy to not notice how much things cost when you tap and use contactless payments.

"We’ve now joined a gym that has free child sport classes it is cheaper for the whole family to use than it was for soft play just for the kids.
