I'm Off to United: Ozil tells Arsenal team mates

Mesut Ozil has told his Arsenal teammates he expects to join Manchester Unitednext year, according to a report.

Sister 'paper The Mirror reportsthe 29-year-old is confident of reuniting with Jose Mourinhoas he approaches the last six months of his contract.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger indicated last week the club could sell Ozil in January in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

Chief football writer John Cross - who penned the story - cautions it 'remains to be seen, though, whether the Old Trafford giants will push through on a deal'. Ozil has been linked with United for the best part of the last year.

Wayne Rooney wanted Sir Alex Ferguson to sign Ozil after the 2010 World Cup but the former Werder Bremen forward moved to Mourinho's Real Madrid for a knockdown £12.4million.

“Özil played wide right at Werder Bremen and then off the front in the second half of the season,"

Ferguson wrote in his 2013 autobiography. "He was part of the great Under-21 team that then went to South Africa and played very well but had not been on our radar to have that type of player, a No.10 off the front.

"I explained to Wayne to leave the signing of the players to me." Ferguson watched Ozil play for Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly at Fulham in August 2010 and remarked a 'lot of clubs are interested in Ozil'. United fanzine Red Issue reported at the time club scouts bizarrely deemed Ozil 'too left-footed'.

United explored the possibility of signing Ozil during David Moyes’ only summer transfer window as Real sought a buyer but Arsenal signed him for a club record £42.4m. Moyes was reluctant to sign a playmaker with Rooney angling to leave again.

Jose Mourinho embraced Ozil and received his shirt after he led Chelsea to a fourth round League Cup victory at Arsenal in October 2013 and Ozil spoke effusively about Mourinho in his book.
