Ibibios reject inclusion in Biafra; declare support for Nigeria’s unity

Pro-Biafra agitation in Nigeria has suffered another massive setback as yet another ethnic group has rejected being a part of the movement.

The Nation reports that the Ibibios of Akwa Ibom state said they wish to remain in the union called Nigeria.

The ethnic group’s position was made known by the Ibibio People’s Union (IPU) in a statement jointly signed by Ikpafak Edet Udofia and Ikpafak Aniekan Udoh, global president and global secretary.

IPU said Ibibio’s purported inclusion in the proposed Biafra was unacceptable.

The union said they are“well aware of a key reason why the first Biafra project failed and will not agree to be taken for a ride again.

“We posit that irrational exuberance led to the declaration of the first Biafra BEFORE ALL the ethnic groups in Eastern Nigeria were properly consulted for their input. The same mistake is being repeated demonstrating that no lessons were learned from the first fiasco.”

The group said it has realized that there is“the need for at least one strong country for black people. Since there is strength in size, the Union believes in a united well-governed Nigeria.

“Nigeria has the people and resources it only needs good and responsible leaders and the will to be that country. Therefore, we encourage all Nigerians to join hands to work to improve the country.”

The union therefore“categorically and very strongly repudiates the effrontery of those who would draw a map of their dream Biafra and include Ibibio land without prior consultation.”

reports earlier stated that the struggle for Biafra has took a hit as another group in the south-south declared that they are not part of the Biafra agitation.

At the end of a one-day executive meeting in Calabar, a group known as south-south patriots said that the south south region is not a part of Biafra,

According to a 12-point communique signed by the group leader, Prince Kingsley Ndedu; the secretary Joseph Udoh; chief mobilization officer Aigberemhon Moses and three others, “The territory of south south is not part of Igbos’ agitation and self-determination of a country called Biafra”.
